GOAL. 3 | ORGANIC PERMACULTURE AGRICULTURE

ABOUT

Eco-Agriculture partners strive for a community where rural livelihoods, nature, and food security are equally valued, and where the communities have a larger role in managing the natural resources they rely on.
We work with community groups and farmers to manage farmland in ways that benefit biodiversity as well as food production. We help them to learn about crops that will nurture the soil and provide nutritional benefits, and also about land-clearing methods that leave trees and bushes in place as wildlife habitat. Our farmers lack good garden fences, ploughs (95 USD), water pumps (973 USD) and pipes (973 USD) in order to become self-reliable permaculture farms.

Most community members dwell on poultry, goat and cattle keeping as one way of improving their lives through getting food and a little income for their upkeep and educating their children

Poultry farming is an enterprise that can be done with low requirements on time and land. As a result, the foundation is developing several organic poultry units on farms belonging to foundation members in order to increase their standards of living. One poultry cage for 100 chicken costs 1,460 USD and a good grazing yard for 1,000 chicken around 973 USD. A good goat's shade for 30 goats costs around 3,400 USD and a good cattle’s shade for 25 cows around 4,865 USD.

Most of our youths depend on fishing activities as their major means of getting bread on the table and improving their way of life. They should be supported and strengthened financially to build them economically for self-reliance and sustainability by giving them the required gears to support their activities. Economic empowerment of the community is one of the Foundation's primary functions. A project is currently underway to establish floating fish cages in Lake Victoria for sustainable aquaculture. This project helps to create employment opportunities, promote sustainable farming in the region and also boost the incomes of community members. We are also planning to support registered groups of fishermen, by giving them revolving funds through micro-finance initiatives allowing them to buy needed fishing gear, like fishing nets, fishing boats and engines. The estimated costs for these things are around 3,400 USD for a complete net, 4,880 USD for a boat, 4,880 USD for one engine and 14,595 USD for a floating cage.
