OUR HISTORY
Sagrema foundation was founded and expanded by Samuel Ochieng Odoyo, Grace Akinyi Ochieng and Meroline Akinyi Ochieng in the year 2016 as a branch of Sagrema self-help group which was by then just a family group, to help members approach and fight the unfortunate issues that befalls families in unison, through micro finance savings and borrowings with the spirit of working together and lending a hand to one another.

It was with the same philanthropic spirit after gaining experience in what was taking place in Sagrema self-help group, that the foundation was formed to extend and include a larger population from the minority within Suba community along the shore and inland of the Islands of Lake Victoria and outreach to the disadvantaged and less privileged community members, to strive and alleviate this less fortunate group in the western part of Kenya in south Nyaza, out of strong poverty, diseases and illiteracy, by providing basic quality education to the needy children, bring health services closer to the community. We campaign and encourage healthy environmental initiatives, microfinance initiatives and organic and permaculture agriculture, through fund-raisers within the community and in Diaspora using Mfangano Sons and Daughters, Volunteers, donors, well-wishers and governments' funding institutions.

Our focus on economic empowerment through sustainability, unlocks possibilities on the individual as well as on the communal level. We work in the fields of 1. Health care, 2.Community water, 3. Organic agriculture, 4. Women and Youth empowerment (micro finance), 5.Education, and 6. Environment, we try to help families and the entire community to get the knowledge, tools and materials they need to achieve the promise in their own lives and to ensure that individuals thrive both today and tomorrow. In particular we try to focus our support on children without adequate family care  and the disadvantaged and less privileged households in order to transform their lives, for we believe that by giving people the tools to lead healthy and productive lives, we can help them lift themselves out of poverty. Our resources alone are not enough! We therefore work to change public policies, attitudes, and behaviors to help improve lives by working together in our local communities through partnerships and building philanthropic spirits in people. We seek to unlock the possibility inside every individual. We see equal value in all lives. And so we are dedicated to improve the quality of life for individuals in and around the islands of lake Victoria in Kenya. From the education of students in Mfangano Island, to the health of a young mother on all the islands.

The problems we seek to solve are complex and demand the coordination and focus of many – leaders, government agencies, communities, and individuals around all the Islands. Our work is challenging, but we know we can get there. We cannot succeed alone, but together we can work for a community where all can thrive.

WELCOME TO SAGREMA FOUNDATION (Google site)

We focus on the areas of greatest need and on the ways in which we can do the most good. From poverty to health, to education, our areas of focus offer the opportunity to dramatically improve the quality of life for hundreds of people. So we build partnerships that bring together resources, expertise, and visions - working with the best organizations and groups within the islands to identify issues, find answers, and drive change. We seek to drive change on a large scale.

Our focus unlocks possibilities in the individual at communal level. Our work in the field of communal health saves lives, helping families and communities thrive, both today, and tomorrow. Our efforts on Education help ensure that individuals have the tools they need to achieve the promise in their own lives, our struggle to Conserve Environment helps keep the Islands greener, beautiful and productive.

We believe all Human beings can embrace who they are, can define their future, and can change the world if empowered and given opportunity.
