Traditional Living on Mfangano Island:

Staying on Mfangano Island offers a unique opportunity to experience traditional Kenyan hospitality in beautifully designed houses. The traditional architecture of these homes blends harmoniously with the island's natural environment, providing a cozy and authentic living experience. Built with local materials and techniques, these houses offer comfort while immersing guests in the island's traditional way of life.

We love hosting people from all over the globe. If you want to come and volunteer with us, stay as a tourist or just travel through, we’d be very happy and love to stay together with you in our family home and be part of the community during your stay.

Accommodation

  • Volunteers, Tourists, relevant internship students and Travelers stay with host families from the local community, based in a tranquil, rural environment

  • Each visitor will have his/her own private bed room and may share a room only if they wish and belongs to the same gender or if are couples, different gender always stay in different private rooms with each bed neatly spread and with a mosquito net, the rooms have a table, a chair, electrical power and electronic gadgets charging sockets

  • Remember that trips involving transportation cost will be paid for by the interested visitor him/herself and not the host

Meals

  • Volunteers, Tourists, internship student and travelers will be provided with 3 meals a day by the host family, or receive a pre-packed carry lunch if the project is far from the host family's residence. OR be bought if the Hotels are around, we expect every Visitor to support the program by contributing only kshs 1000 per day for the upkeep, the rest of the cost we will manage as usual.

  • Food will be prepared by the Host family as per the normal daily diet timetable and on the request of the visitor in case, he/she is interested in a different meal. we cater and care for the vegetarians, vegan and all kinds of interests

  • Any visitor who comes with his/her budget is allowed to use our kitchen to prepare his/her meals, with the assistance of the family chefs and it will require a meal time table to be prepared in collaboration of both the visitor and the family chefs.

  • We prefer preparing meals with the consent of all people living in the house/family and considering different food interests of different house dwellers including Visitors.

 
Learning opportunities
Volunteers, Students, Tourists and Travelers have trust-based total freedom of doing whatever they want and at their convenient time they will learn from our projects, visiting all places they would want to, they will visit our rich shrines and see for themselves some of the tools, utensils, vessels, and Caves used by our great grandparents.

1) Volunteers Working with us will relax and participate in any manual work at their own wish. They will acquire several educational opportunities including visiting Local fishing industries and interact with Local fisher men for more information. There are several interesting areas in the Island to visit and view, (Mfangano Rock Art, Mfangano Peace museum, Mfangano Plateau, Tilapia fish ponds) volunteers will also learn new languages that are Swahili, Suba, and Luo, they will learn about our culture,  lifestyle, methods of farming and fishing,

During free time volunteers can hike the numerous mountains around, Visit and refresh in beach clubs around, stroll around in our shopping centers, watch local live football matches and even view international screen football matches in our local social halls, they can as well go swimming practically in lake Victoria which is a distance of only 300 meters from our family home, they can also visit their friends around.
 
From community storytellers, the Volunteers will get a lot of legends and memorized stories of all our cultural livings and styles from the time of our great grandparents and how they have changed with time.

They will get to know our rich culture and how it is still preserved to date plus it's value to the communities, how we do all our activities customarily and culturally to date.
 
We have, guided and connected Volunteers with different types of organic farms owned by different growers on the Island, Our Primary and Secondary Schools, Mfangano Island Rock Art, Our rich shrines, Spring Water sites, Mfangano Peace Museum, Our Seasonal Streams, the Soklo Plateau, Mfangano Tilapia Fish ponds, Mfangano Hills and even the beautiful views of Lake Victoria all-round the four Islands many times

2) acquiring aural History of our traditional and natural methods of organic farming which doesn't require the use of chemicals and still gives us good yield and sees how some of our people still use our traditional tools for both digging and weeding.

3) acquire our culture and ways of Living and behavior

4) acquire the knowledge from our inherited traditional history on how our grandfathers and mothers led their lives.

5) admire and enjoy the Islands' good climatic condition, The most enjoyable Islands’ Climates conducive for all activities
 
6) admire and enjoy the cool breeze and view of Lake Victoria
 
7) see all Species of different freshwater fish and even enjoy eating them

8) see and enjoy eating food cooked in the traditional way using traditional methods and the crops we grow for food.

9) share and Learn our traditional beliefs and our old ways of self-governance before the coming of the white in Kenya

10) They will learn directly and practically there and then how we do all our activities of all kinds of their interest/choice and in their field of learning even beyond.

11) The family has vast experience with all the four Islands and even the nearby parts of the mainland and their different locations meaning the volunteer will be helped to integrate into local society and interact with them as much as they can
 
Free Time Activities 
* Guests/Volunteer will be free to use their free time for excursions especially during weekends or selected days other than working days. 
* They will be free to spend their free time in local park, bar or a club for nightlife lovers, attend a social function or any other social places where you will meet other great volunteers in the area. 
* They may also choose to spend a few days or one of their weekends at one of Mfangano sister Islands; Takawiri, Rusinga, Kibougi, Remba, Ringiti or any one of the beautiful inhabited birds Islands; Atego, Risi, Mbasa, Namuolo Nyama and Niware. 
* they can also do swimming direct in Lake Victoria, sunbathing, watch birds and/or fishing.
* Volunteers will have to pay transportation
 fees for these activities as they involve travel costs. 
* All payments will be done on arrival except for the guest who may like to secure a particular room/rooms of his/her interest.
